Robert Foulis - inventor of steam fog horn

Saint John, NB, is celebrating their 225th anniversary and are recognizing people from that city that have made a difference. One of those is Robert Foulis,, a land surveyor and inventor. He designed a coded series of steam whistles to warn captains that land was near when visibility was severely reduced by fog. His invention that worked similarly to a tea kettle is ranked #30 in the top 50 Canadian invention. Partridge Island Light was the first steam powered fog horn in the area.

Swallowtail didn't receive a fog horn until the 1960s, using a fog bell instead.
